With a click of her heels and her own vanishing act behind the podium, new head women’s basketball coach Melissa “MJ” Baker emerged in bright ruby red basketball sneakers and proclaimed to a packed Skyline Room at Emporia State’s Memorial Union on Thursday:
And with that, the ninth head coach in Emporia State women’s basketball history officially assumed her duties to lead Lady Hornet basketball. Athletic director David Spafford introduced his new head coach saying she was the natural choice to lead the program.
Coach MJ, as she prefers to be called, said that she’s trying to build more than just a team at ESU.
She said in her press conference that the team will play an uptempo style of offense. She said after the presser that the defense will get up and down as well.
Baker brings with her a career record of 334-148 in 16 years at the collegiate level and has finished outside the top three in the conference race just once. She joins E-State after eight years at Eastern Florida State College where she led the Titans to a 183-58 record while going 83-21 in the NJCAA’s Southern Conference with three conference titles, all with undefeated records.
