Emporia and several nearby communities are benefiting from funding announced by the Kansas Department of Commerce.
Emporia’s Gazette Collective restoration project is getting $100,000 in HEAL funding. This is turning the former Emporia Gazette office at 517 Merchant into a restaurant, office space for Mitchell-Markowitz Construction, luxury residential units, short-term visitor rental units and an artist-in-residence studio.
Other area projects receiving funds:
*Admire’s North Lyon County Senior Center gets $35,000. The Last Chance Arcade will turn a 120-year-old building into a retro arcade with over 60 classic games
*Council Grove has $65,000 for the Weathered Wood Home Store
*Eureka gets $41,000 for The Eureka Project
*Madison has $11,500 to replace the Senior Center facade
*Matfield Green has $65,000 for The Gym at Matfield Green Recording Studio
*Osage City has $65,000 for The Star Block restaurant and retail development
*Overbrook has $33,700 for The Overbrook Bakery
*Strong City gets $65,000 for the David Rettiger Building
HEAL stands for Historic Economic Asset Lifeline. This round involves $1.5 million in state funds and over $6 million in local match money. Nearly 20 projects were funded with this round of HEAL money.
