The Emporia High softball team snapped a six-game losing streak with a sweep at Wichita Independent on Tuesday.
Emporia High won the first game, 18-4, in five innings and took the finale, 16-1, in six innings. In game one, Emporia High scored five in the first inning and one in the second for a 6-4 lead through two. After that, the Lady Spartans scored 12 consecutive runs over the next two innings. A 9-run fourth was highlighted by an inside-the-park home run by Atlyn Heffron and a 3-run triple by Marley Sewell. Heffron went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs. Alivia Barrett allowed four runs on two hits and had eight strikeouts in the circle. In game two, Emporia High jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two before Independent made it 3-1 through three. Emporai High scored 13 consecutive runs over the final three innings, highlighted by a 9-run sixth. As part of the 9-run sixth, Sewell recorded an RBI double and a 3-run triple. Sewell drove went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Mackayleigh Arrington went 2-for-5 with five RBIs while Yzabel Ultreras hit her second home run of the season. Barrett allowed one run on five hits and seven strikeouts in the circle. Emporia High (6-10) will play its first home games since April 3 on Friday, hosting Iola with the doubleheader to begin at 4 p.m. at Peter Pan Park.
