The Emporia High softball team was swept by Iola on Friday night at Peter Pan Park. Iola won the first game, 23-6, scoring 20 runs over the final two innings, and took the second game, 5-2.
In game one, Iola had a 1-0 lead through one before Emporia High scored three in the second. Marley Sewell tied the game with an RBI single, Adreill Aguilar had an RBI groundout, and Molly Williams had an RBI single. Iola tied the game in the fifth and scored eight in the sixth and 12 in the seventh. The Lady Spartans scored twice in the sixth as Ryane Howe scored on a passed ball and Chloe Steele had an RBI single. Julianna Hamlin had an RBI single in the seventh for the Lady Spartans’ final run. Williams went 2-for-4 at the plate while Alivia Barrett went six innings, allowing 17 runs on 16 hits and three strikeouts.
In game two, Iola took a 1-0 lead in the first before Howe tied the game with an RBI triple. The Mustangs added two in the third and two insurance runs in the seventh for a 5-1 lead. Emporia High scored its final run on a fielder’s choice and had the game-winning run at the plate, but couldn’t extend the game. Barrett went the distance, allowing five runs on nine hits and six strikeouts. Atlyn Heffron went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Head coach Tommy McClure said the Lady Spartans are still working hard while continuing to improve late in the season.
Emporia High (6-12) hosts Topeka High on Tuesday.
