The Emporia State baseball team gave up four runs in the bottom of the first and suffered an 8-5 defeat to Northwest Missouri in Maryville, Mo. on Saturday. With the loss, the Hornets (23-24, 16-20 MIAA) were swept by the Bearcats in the three-game series. Game 3 starter Gerardo Grijalva (2-2) faced four batters and didn’t record an out while walking three. All four of the runs scored and ESU played catch up the rest of the game. E-State cut the deficit in half with two runs in the second on a Brady Unrein double and a Bearcat error and another Northwest Miscue allowed ESU to cut it to one in the third. The Bearcats and ESU then traded runs after Dominic Felix homered to get ESU back within one but the Hornets would get no closer than that. Logan Myers extended his hitting streak to 15 while T. J. Racherbaumer, Felix, and Unrein each had three hits. Coby Rogers and Eli Hernandez combined to toss the first six innings in relief giving up just one run. The Hornets earn the No. 9 seed in the MIAA Tournament and face the host No. 8 seed Missouri Southern in the first round in Joplin on Wednesday.
