Two years of study, planning and work led to the recent unveiling of the city of Emporia’s Construction and Community Event Street Closure live map.
The new feature went live near the start of May, and the goal is to make it easy for the general public to see what’s closed, as well as tentative start and end dates for projects, detour routes if needed and other information. As part of the City Engineering Office, GIS Coordinator Dusty Purcell says information comes to her on a fairly regular basis and it’s a simple process to get the map updated.
City Communications Director Christine Torrens says this is a logical upgrade to prior notices.
The current map shows the ongoing closure of the 12th and Prairie intersection as part of the 24th and Prairie waterline replacement process, as well as the related truck detour. It also shows a partial closure of 18th between Industrial and Prairie for concrete removal and replacement.
Residents and visitors are urged to bookmark the page, emporiaks.gov/livemap, and check regularly for updates. Other interactive maps of interest, including street data, zoning, parks and trails and survey data, are available at emporiaks.gov/gis, and a map detailing the recently-approved Common Consumption Area in downtown Emporia will be made available soon.
