The Emporia High baseball team was swept by Manhattan on Thursday, 6-4 and 5-4.
In game one, the Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of RBI singles by Micah Gray and Andrew Ruxton. Manhattan scored one in the first and tied the game in the third before scoring two in the fourth for a 4-2 lead. In the fifth, Gray made it 4-3 with an RBI single and Ruxton tied it with an RBI double. Manhattan regained the lead with a pair of the runs in the bottom of the fifth. Owen Ruge took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Gray went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
In game two, the Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a fielder’s choice and an error. Manhattan tied the game in the first and score twice in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. The Spartans tied the game at 4 in the seventh on an RBI double by Ruge and a sacrifice fly by Gray. Manhattan won the game in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly. Chase Harrington took the loss on the mound in relief, going three innings, allowing one run on five hits and three strikeouts.
Emporia High (13-10, 5-5 Centennial) hosts Wichita Southeast at 4 p.m. Friday at Soden’s Grove for Senior Night.
