A public meeting is coming early next month to discuss the results of an “evaluated exercise” at Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station.
Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency Region 7 will chair the meeting and discuss offsite activities, while a representative from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Region 4 office will discuss onsite activities.
The public meeting is at 11 am June 5 at the Coffey County Library Burlington branch and follows a one-day exercise at Wolf Creek on June 3. The special exercise “is a biennial requirement to determine the adequacy of the radiological emergency preparedness and response plans.” Activities June 3 will mean emergency facilities for Kansas and Coffey County will be activated, with offsite local, county and state activities observed, evaluated and graded by FEMA and onsite activities evaluated by the NRC.
The goal of this exercise is to ensure Wolf Creek, Kansas and Coffey County can protect the public near the nuclear plant from harm in cases of a “radiological emergency.”
