Construction will still take several more months to finish, but the work on the Emporia Fire Department’s new headquarters will hit a milestone this week.
There will be a special gathering at 518 Market for what’s called a Topping Out Ceremony — meaning the last crossbeam for the roof will be put in place. Emporia city commissioners will be among those in attendance.
Construction has been underway since groundbreaking this past November and could be done by January. The new facility will add significantly more space for personnel and equipment when compared to the Fire Department’s longstanding home on the south side of White Auditorium.
The Topping Out Ceremony will be at 1 pm Wednesday.
