Kansas Second District Congressman Derek Schmidt says President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” is a positive step forward for the country.
Schmidt recently joined KVOE’s Morning Show to discuss several matters, and budget matters led the conversation. Schmidt says the reconciliation bill includes a lot of President Trump’s stated agenda when he ran last year.
Democrats say the bill cuts Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, while shifting the tax burden from those that can’t afford more taxes to those that can. Schmidt says Medicare and Social Security won’t be touched, while Medicaid will see some adjustments to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse as a way, Schmidt says, to prioritize Medicaid for people who need it. Schmidt also says there there is a cancellation of a tax increase by making temporary cuts to estate taxes permanent, while the bill also protects the child care tax credit and lets residents use standardized deductions instead of itemizing. The bill also ends taxes on tips.
Some Republicans say the bill hasn’t done enough to rein in spending. Schmidt agrees, but he says it’s important to finish a bill that makes progress.
The House narrowly passed the measure, while a vote is ahead in the Senate.
