Public hearings are taking place over the next week on Evergy’s proposed rate increase for its Kansas Central service territory, but area residents will either have to travel or attend online if they want to participate.
The first meeting is at 6 pm Wednesday at Wichita State University’s Lowe Auditorium. The second is 6 pm June 16 at the Washburn Institute of Technology. Registration is needed to attend by Zoom.
The Kansas Corporation Commission is overseeing these meetings and determining whether Evergy can move forward with its nearly $197 million rate increase request, which translates to an 8.62 percent rate hike and an average monthly increase of over $13 for residential customers. Evergy says it has invested nearly $1 billion in its infrastructure since the KCC conducted a rate review in 2023, including technology updates and grid improvements. Also included were power plant upgrades at Jeffery, LaCygne and Lawrence.
