Rockland Stone’s request for a special Lyon County permit to build a new quarry has the approval of the Lyon County Planning and Appeals Board.
On Wednesday night, the board unanimously approved Rockland’s request for an Agriculture Conditional-Use permit for the quarry in the 100 block of Road 140. Rockland plans to haul up to 15 loads per week, using Road 140 west to Road A and north to US Highway 50 as the initial haul route.
County commissioners will consider the request at their June 25 meeting.
Rockland’s request is in contrast to a similar zoning request by US Stone for a planned quarry in the 1200 block of Road C. The US Stone request drew concerns from the Lyon County Commission last week, notably with the proposed haul route possibly using minimum maintenance portions of Roads C and D to move up to 10 loads per week as the stated goals. The Lyon County Highway Department and Sheriff’s Office are working together on a traffic survey to identify issues and develop potential solutions.
