Tents are scattered across town, but they are up. Which means only one thing — fireworks can legally be bought soon in the Emporia city limits.
The fireworks sales and discharge window begins June 27. Police Capt Ray Mattas reminds residents this is for locations inside the city limits and there are several things not to do once you have fireworks on hand.
Once fireworks can legally be bought and shot June 27, the legal window for sales and discharge goes through July 5. For most days in that window, the available times are 10 am to 10 pm. The exceptions are July 3-4, where people can buy and shoot fireworks from 10 am to 11 pm.
Mattas tells KVOE News “nobody seems to abide by to the time limit,” and he urges people to follow the rules this fireworks season.
When it comes to complaints, Mattas says officer response may be delayed, depending on the number of calls at a given time. He also says officers will ask residents to stop shooting off fireworks once — and if they have to return, they may well issue citations and take the offending fireworks.
Speaking of fireworks, plans are just about set for Emporia’s annual fireworks show, which will be held at Emporia State University on July 4. There are no significant changes to past parking areas or traffic flow.
