For years, Emporia’s annual Garden Tour, organized by Lyon County Master Gardeners, has highlighted home gardens in varying settings. That was still the case in large part Saturday — with the exception of the garden setup at Hetlinger Developmental Services.
Horticulture Therapist Andrea Salsbury says the greenhouse and garden program has grown — pardon the pun — since it was first installed.
Salsbury says the program has numerous benefits for Hetlinger clients, including healthy eating, increased plant knowledge, enhanced social skills and other life skills with clients getting paid for their work.
Residents could tour any or all of the sites at their pace, learning more about the different gardens from residents and from Lyon County Master Gardeners.
Besides Hetlinger, the other four participating locations were:
*824 Rural, John and Doreen King
*2006 Prairie, Deb and Ray Marsh
*2827 Sonora Drive, Mark Schondelmaier
*921 Market, Nancy and Russell Lawson
Along with organizing the Garden Tour, the Master Gardeners are seeking new members for classes later this year. Applications are due Aug. 1. Click here for the application link.
