A man wanted for trying to kill a police officer and a teacher in Rice County is on trial in Lyon County.
Adam Jay Hrabik, age 45, was booked Friday. Trial had been delayed for numerous related court proceedings since October 2021 and was tentatively set to take place in Ellis County in February but was moved to Emporia in March following a Kansas Supreme Court order to transfer the case. Judge Merlin Wheeler is presiding.
Nearly five years ago, Hrabik was charged with attempted capital murder in connection with shootings of Lyons Police Officer Cory Ryan and Lyons High teacher Brian Friess following a dispute call. Hrabik allegedly shot Ryan several times, leading to critical injuries. Hrabik also allegedly threatened and then shot Friess, listed as a former teacher and coach of Hrabik, leading to serious injuries. Both shooting victims survived. Lyons Police Chief Justin Holliday was also injured in the incident and survived.
Hrabik faces single counts of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated assault, use of a deadly weapon. Trial could last through July 3.
