The congregation at First Christian Church is settling into its new location, although it likely won’t be a permanent stay.
Church operations are now at Emporia Presbyterian Church West Campus after decades at 12th and Merchant.
First Christian Church approached the Emporia State Foundation about possibly buying the property several months ago, and the sale was announced in April. The church officially moved last month — a move that church member Shelby Fuller called bittersweet on KVOE’s Morning Show this week, even though it had been a discussion point for at least two years.
Church member Judy Moore says First Christian Church had conversations with the ESU Foundation for about six months before a decision was made. She says the congregation was on board with the move.
First Christian Church is using the Presbyterian Church West Campus upstairs offices for its business work and the sanctuary for its services. This means Sunday school, the food pantry and Boy Scout Troop 157 operations have also moved. Moore says this signals a vibrant church community.
First Christian Church had been at 12th and Merchant since the early 1950s. There are currently no plans for a permanent home.
