Formal charges are pending in Morris County after an alleged pursuit involving a stolen pickup and a suspicious feed truck late last month.
The Morris County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy took a report of a stolen pickup from the 2800 block of G Avenue about six miles west of White City. They also took a report of a suspicious feed truck in the 3100 block of U Avenue, about 12 miles south-southwest of the original report and a mile east of Herington.
The feed truck went into a yard and got disabled, according to deputies. Deputies responded and found the stolen pickup nearby as they learned of two people, a man and woman, fleeing on foot to the south. Deputies then set up a perimeter, using help from Morris County K-9 Kimber, the Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Wildlife and Parks game wardens to arrest Kimmie Damron and Jonathan Smith, both of Quenemo.
Smith has been charged with two counts of battery on law enforcement, two counts of criminal threat and single counts of attempted aggravated escape from custody, interference with law enforcement and criminal threat, while Damron has not been charged as a result of the alleged pursuit. Hearing dates have not posted to the District Court Public Access Portal in this case, but both Smith and Damron were awaiting preliminary hearings July 17 on separate charges of theft, criminal damage and conspiracy to commit theft.
