Things are just about in place for Emporia’s annual fireworks display Friday night.
Aside from last-minute setup, longtime lead pyrotechnician Bernie Toso, a guest on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Thursday, says everything is ready. He expects a spectacular show beginning around 9:40 pm.
Toso says fireworks prices have been slightly higher than in years past, but that has to do with several factors — both current and ongoing.
Before the show, the Emporia Municipal Band will have its weekly concert at Welch Stadium beginning at 8 pm. Director Nancy Riecker says the American Song Book is an important component to the band and to the concert on Friday night.
Speaking of Welch Stadium, Emporia Police Capt. Ray Mattas says it has the best sight lines on campus — even though more people tend to use the green space outside the Student Recreation Building.
Gates open at Welch Stadium at 7 pm. Mattas says there will be special parking for handicapped-accessible residents near Wilson Park across Highland Street from the Art Annex.
With the length and quality of the show, travelers tend to park along Interstate 35 and Kansas Highway 99 to see the display. Emporia Police say that is not allowed. People also cannot have personal fireworks, alcohol or glass containers anywhere on Emporia State property.
