Wednesday marks the first meeting of the academic year for the USD 253 Emporia Board of Education and for new Superintendent David McGehee. And both the board and McGehee have a lot on the agenda.
Board members will consider approving several items listed under the human or fiscal resources category, including the 2025-26 salary schedules for administrators, licensed professionals, classified staff and classified exempt staff. They could also approve the 2026 agreement for school nutrition programs, as well as meal prices for the 2025-26 academic year and an initiative to subsidize school meals for students for the third straight year.
Emergency operations plan updates, a high school math action plan and various handbooks will all get first readings Wednesday. There will be a second reading of a proposed joint task force involving the city of Emporia, Lyon County and the Emporia Recreation Commission for the express purpose of reducing the county’s mill levy.
The agenda also includes a memorandum of understanding with Flint Hills Technical College for temporary dirt storage as the college prepares for construction projects at its main campus across West 18th from Emporia High.
The meeting starts at 6 pm at Mary Herbert Education Center. McGehee served as interim assistant superintendent for business and operations in 2023 and was chosen by the board earlier this year after Allison Anderson-Harder announced her retirement in February.
