Emporia Fire was called to a local apartment unit for what was initially reported as a gas leak early Tuesday evening.
Crews went to 412 West 5th just after 5:30 pm after residents reported smelling natural gas in the apartment complex. Following an investigation, firefighters found no gas, however, they did detect a minor carbon monoxide leak in a water heater in the basement.
Kansas Gas was called in to shut off the water heater and take necessary safety actions. No residents were injured or reported any CO related illness.
