State tax collections went above expectations last month.
June had tax receipts at $1.06 billion, almost $73 million and almost 7.5 percent above projections. The number was also up 3.2 percent from last year.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly says she is still concerned about potential budget issues later this decade, saying the budget could be in the negative by over $375 million by 2029 because lawmakers plan to spend anywhere from $300 million to $700 million more than tax collections through the rest of the decade.
Republican House Speaker Dan Hawkins says the governor “is not making any sense” because she complained about 1.5 percent budget cuts recently before discussing whether the state is spending too much money in a budget that spends less than she requested.
