Whether it was working with 4Hers, handling cattle or assisting with the Lyon County Fair, Lyon County Rancher Roger Potter will be remembered as a dedicated leader, volunteer and friend by those closest to him.
In addition to his lifelong profession as a rancher, Potter was active areawide in many ventures, including serving as the president of Lyon County Rural Water District Number 2; past president of the Lyon County Fair Board; member of the Flint Hills Beef Fest and Saffordville United Methodist Church; and past master of both the Emporia Masonic Lodge Number 12 and Saffordville Masonic Lodge Number 395. Potter passed this past Saturday at the age of 77.
While speaking to KVOE News Monday, longtime friend Brian Keith stated that Potter was a passionate person who would never give anything but his very best to any project or cause he was involved with.
Lyon County Extension Ag Agent Brian Reese remembers Potter as an individual who was never afraid to speak his mind and never afraid to give of his own time to assist others.
Among some of Potter’s closest friends was fellow fair board member Gregg Gasche, who says Potter became like family to him throughout their nearly 40-year friendship. Gasche had no shortage of words to describe Potter and his work in the community, calling him, among other things, a true “Anchor” and “Leader.”
Funeral services are coming later this week for Potter. Cremation is planned with a visitation taking place from 6-8 pm Tuesday at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building. A memorial service will be at 2 pm Wednesday at Saffordville United Methodist Church, followed by burial at Hillside Cemetery.
Potter is survived by his wife, two children, two grandchildren, a brother and three sisters. Contributions can be made to Saffordville United Methodist Church or the Arab Shrine Travel Fund.
