Lyon County deputies are investigating after the discovery of skeletal remains near Emporia this week.
Sheriff Jeff Cope says remains were discovered in the 200 block of South Prairie on Wednesday, with Emporia Police initially responding shortly after 3:30 pm before it was determined the location was outside the city limits. Lyon County deputies have been leading the investigation since then. Cope says a citizen reported the remains to Lyon County Emergency Communications and thus started the investigation.
Cope says the remains may have been undiscovered for several years. Foul play is not suspected. The person’s identity and gender have not been determined, and it may be several weeks before more information is confirmed.
