Two Americus teenagers were hurt in a rollover UTV crash Thursday evening.
Lyon County deputies were alerted to the incident in the 2700 block of Road D, or about five miles northwest of Americus, shortly after 6 pm. Deputy Riley Jones says both riders had already been taken by family members to Newman Regional Health after suffering non-life-threatening injuries by the time a report was made.
Deputies both went to the scene to investigate the crash and the hospital to check on the occupants, identified as 14-year-olds Oliver Schneickert and Tucker Smith. Jones says the UTV, suspected to have been driven by Schneickert, was southbound on Road D at about 40 mph when it hit a patch of loose gravel, sending it off the road and into a ditch where it rolled.
The investigation also indicates one of the occupants was wearing a seatbelt while the other was not. Jones did not specify which rider was belted.
