The Lyon County Fair is underway.
Typically, the fair starts with the Friends of 4-H Dinner, followed immediately by the dog, hand pet and cat show. That’s not the case this year. The horse show, normally third on the schedule, actually was the leadoff event Sunday. The dog, hand pet and cat show is Tuesday, followed by Friends of 4-H on Thursday. Lyon County Extension Ag Agent Brian Rees says a lot of the adjustments revolve around school schedules.
The fair will have its traditional 4-H show events as well as activities inside the Fairgrounds Anderson Building. Most of the grandstand events are also back, although the truck and tractor pull is not taking place this year due to a schedule conflict with the presenter. Having said that, Lyon County Extension Horticulturist Travis Carmichael says there is still a lot of fun to be had between now and the demolition derby — the fair’s annual grand finale event — Aug. 9.
The fair this year also includes the giveaway of 400 severe weather radios, thanks to a federal mitigation grant as secured by Lyon County Emergency Management. The barbecue contest also returns for the second straight year Aug. 2-3.
