After oppressive heat over the last week, more seasonal conditions are still on track for Wednesday and even cooler conditions will close out the rest of the week.
Air temperatures should be 98 degrees Tuesday with heat index readings as high as 106, so a heat advisory continues areawide until 8 pm Tuesday. Wednesday will have high temperatures in the low 90s and peak heat index readings again around 103.
Sharply cooler conditions are coming Thursday through Saturday, with high temperatures near 80 degrees all three days.
As the recent heat has continued, nonprofit entities serving those in need have seen increased needs. Cases in point are Abundant Harvest, the Emporia Rescue Mission and Shiloh Home of Hope. At Abundant Harvest, Manager Josh Graves says the agency has changed its food giveaway schedule to account for the heat.
The Emporia Rescue Mission, meanwhile, is at full capacity.
It’s a similar story at Shiloh.
Graves encourages people to make financial contributions so these agencies can continue meeting community needs. Also, Shiloh Home needs sizes 4, 5 and 6 diapers to help mothers. Clothing is also needed at both the Rescue Mission and Shiloh. Tents and air mattresses are also suggested.
