Smoky conditions will continue across the KVOE listening area Saturday.
Smoke from Canadian wildfires began affecting area residents well before sunrise Friday, initially pushing air quality to the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category for a few hours before going to “unhealthy” shortly before sunrise and staying in that category into Saturday. Similar conditions are expected until at least Saturday evening before slight chances of off-and-on thunderstorms for much of Sunday.
An air quality alert continues for the state after action Friday by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, including several tips to avoid health issues:
*Healthy people should limit or avoid strenuous outdoor exercise.
*More vulnerable people should remain indoors.
*Help keep indoor air clean by closing doors and windows and running air conditioners with air filters.
*Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.
*Contact your doctor if you have symptoms such as chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath or severe fatigue.
Residents can track the Air Quality Index by city or ZIP code online at fire.airnow.gov.
