An investigation is ongoing following a structure fire in central Emporia early Saturday morning.
The fire was reported just before 3 am at 931 Sunnyslope, according to Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage. Steinlage says the residents of the home were outside upon their arrival, with heavy smoke coming from the side door of the residence.
After making entry, firefighters found smoke and flames in the basement and quickly extinguished the flames, which were limited to the basement. That said, Steinlage tells KVOE News there was extensive smoke damage throughout the home.
The investigation is still ongoing; however, initial indications are that a mattress in the basement caught fire. Three dogs were rescued from the home with no apparent injury.
Damage estimates, an exact cause, and the origin point are pending. Stay with KVOE, KVOE.com, and KVOE’s social media for more updates as they become available.
