Conversations have resumed for a possible new public recreation center in Emporia, and the Rec Commission’s Steering Committee will meet Tuesday to continue the discussion.
Last month, the Steering Committee discussed possibly proceeding with new construction at Champions Landing or finding alternate locations, including a new facility at Jones Aquatic Center or the current site — Lee Beran Rec Center — after significant renovations. At the time, the board said Champions Landing should be the primary focus but Jones should not be eliminated.
Rec Commission officials have said for years that Lee Beran is too small to meet current needs, and the Commission was in the final stages of setting a public vote on funding before Tyson Foods announced its plans to close all local operations this past December.
Tuesday’s meeting wil;l be at 3:30 pm at White Auditorium City Conference Room 1AB.
