Greenwood County Sheriff Heath Samuels says an Emporia man passed away during an incident Saturday at Madison City Lake.
Samuels says the Emergency Communications Department received a 911 call shortly after 4:30 pm as a person was yelling for help at the lake. The caller said a person had gone underwater and had not resurfaced.
Emergency crews responded quickly, but Samuels says the rescue effort became a search before a male was found around 8:45 pm. The victim was later identified as 23-year-old Alexzander D Martin of Emporia.
Besides Greenwood County deputies, Samuels says help arrived from Eureka Fire, Madison Fire, Emporia Fire, Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.
