A mussel survey is coming for an area around a soon-to-be-replaced bridge following action by Lyon County Commissioners Thursday morning.
As part of their regular action agenda, commissioners approved a nearly $25,000 quote from BioSurvey Group for the survey, which is related to the work on Rocky Ford Bridge. The reason for the survey is the presence of a rare species of mussel located in the vicinity.
The species must be relocated before physical work is able to begin, according to information from Lyon County Engineer Wayne Scritchfield. Once the actual bridge work begins, possibly by early next year, the new bridge will be located adjacent to the current structure.
The majority of the project cost will be paid for through a Kansas Department of Transportation reimbursement grant.
In other business, commissioners approved a bill of more than $10,000 from Cummins Sales and Service to repair a generator for the sign shop and a shed after it failed last year. In separate matters, Facilities Director Robbie Weiss presented two quotes for commission consideration, one for almost $26,000 from Stanfield Roofing to re-coat the Extension Building roof and another for over $7,500 from American Equipment Company for a snow plow.
Both quotes were approved.
Commissioners also approved signing an Order Assigning Partition Fence Responsibility for a fence located on Road 220. This action followed a fence viewing by commissioners Wednesday morning.
Due to activities surrounding the arrival of the Wall That Heals in Emporia, commissioners will hold their regular action meeting next Friday at 9 am inside of the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
