Kansas Second District Congressman Derek Schmidt now has a challenger on the Democrat side.
Veterinarian, veteran and rancher Don Coover announced his campaign Monday. Coover served for more than a decade in the US Army after graduating from the West Point Military Academy. He also has a veterinary license from Kansas State and now runs a beef cattle genetics company, working ranch and veterinary practice.
Coover says he’s running to reverse the impacts of higher grocery prices, effects of tariffs on agriculture, possibility of people losing healthcare due to changes in Medicaid and risk of closure of local hospitals.
So far, Coover and Schmidt are the only filed candidates for the Second District, which represents all area counties except for Greenwood County, Republican Ron Estes is facing a primary challenge from Michael Gaynor.
