Citing recent finances, Emporia Rescue Mission Board of Directors President Peter Deblonk says continued operations of Abundant Harvest were “no longer feasible,” hence the decision to cease operations effective October 1.
Deblonk stated in an interview with KVOE News shortly after the announcement of the community kitchen’s closure on Friday afternoon that finances were in a constant decline for several months before the board of directors decided to end operations. He clarified that the biggest contributors to the decline were salaries, which Deblonk says accounted for 70 percent of the budget, food transportation costs, which reportedly averaged $100 a trip and maintenance and upkeep for the Abundant Harvest facility.
The decision to end operations will not affect the Rescue Mission’s other endeavors, specifically the men’s shelter, but Deblonk says that is only because they have decided to close Abundant Harvest, effectively sacrificing one branch of the operation to save the whole.
KVOE News asked Deblonk if there are any immediate plans to coordinate with other food distribution charities at this time. He stated they may be reaching out to organizations in Topeka; however, he did not indicate that there has been any coordination with local organizations. That said, KVOE News did reach out to Emporia Salvation Army Captain Mylie Hadden, who says she is expecting an increase in service as a result of Abundant’s upcoming closure.
Deblonk stated to KVOE News that this may not be the permanent end of Abundant Harvest, as they are exploring a possible “backup plan” that would involve relocating to a smaller facility requiring less maintenance and cost than their current location.
Deblonk clarified that no “backup” facility has been identified at this time. KVOE News will continue to monitor and update the situation as it unfolds.
4 pm Friday: Abundant Harvest to cease operations effective October 1
Come October, Emporia’s Abundant Harvest will be no more.
The Emporia Rescue Mission Board of Directors announced via a news release Friday afternoon that it has decided to cease operations for the local food kitchen effective October 1 or once all current supplies are “exhausted.” The release, sent to KVOE News, cited a lack of donations and volunteers as the chief factors in the decision.
The closure of Abundant Harvest will have no impact on the Rescue Mission’s other ventures, including The Men’s Shelter.
In addition to its numerous food giveaways, Abundant Harvest also provided community meals several days a week to those struggling with food insecurity and difficulties. This is a developing story and KVOE News has reached out to the board of directors for additional comment.
