Nobody was home when fire developed and apparently ripped through a rural Emporia home early Sunday morning.
Local emergency personnel began getting alerts about the fire in the 1800 block of Road B-5 shortly before 6:45 am. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Tony Fuller says the fire had already collapsed a house into its basement by the time crews arrived. The fire was declared under control around 7:45 am, although crews stayed on scene for several hours afterward to monitor the situation.
Investigators are looking for the cause and origin point. Fuller says firefighters will allow the house remnants to smolder after pouring around 20,000 gallons of water on it.
Emporia Fire’s Lyon County District 4 responded, as did Lyon County deputies. Americus and Olpe were initially called, with Dunlap replacing Olpe at the scene.
