Two Texas residents were hurt and hospitalized after a crash on the Kansas Turnpike southwest of Emporia early Thursday.
Emporia Fire/EMS was part of the emergency response to Turnpike mile marker 116.4 northbound, 11 miles southwest of Emporia and just east of the Lyon-Chase county line, after the wreck was reported shortly before 3:30 am.
Troopers with the Kansas Highway Patrol say a pickup driven by 25-year-old Ricardo Gallardo Jr of San Juan crashed after Gallardo apparently fell asleep at the wheel. The truck went off the highway to the right. As Gallardo overcorrected, the truck then went across both northbound lanes and hit the center barrier wall repeatedly. The truck then rolled onto its top before stopping.
Gallardo and a passenger, 20-year-old Joel Sanchez of Alamo, were taken to Newman Regional Health. Both had suspected minor injuries.
