Gubernatorial candidate and current Kansas Senator Ethan Corson made a stop in Emporia Saturday as part of his campaign trail.
During that stop, Corson took time to speak with KVOE News regarding his hopes and plans for the state if he were chosen to lead as the next Governor. In Corson’s view, there are three major areas of focus he plans to dedicate much of his time and attention to if elected.
The first: Affordability and quality of life.
Number two: Creating more jobs and employment opportunities.
Number three: Continued support for public K-12 education.
A proud native of Johnson County, Corson, a Democrat, graduated from Sahwnee Mission South High School before attending Garden City Community College, where he played baseball. He would move on to Washington University in St. Louis, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science, journalism and communication, followed by a Juris Doctorate from the Washington University School of Law.
Corson currently serves the Kansas 7th District after being elected to the state senate back in 2020, succeeding fellow Democrat Barbara Bollier, who chose not to seek re-election and instead ran for US Senate, a race won by Republican Roger Marshall.
Corson sees himself as a “bipartisan moderate” who is not afraid to reach across the aisle, something he believes has made him effective as a senator and will serve him well if elected to the role of governor.
Currently, Corson is one of two Democrats in the race for Governor alongside 8th District Kansas Senator Cindy Holscher. On the Republican side, the field of candidates includes businessman Philip Sarnecki, lieutenant governor Jeff Colyer, Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson, current Secretary of State Scott Schwab, current Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt, as well as talk show host Doug Billings and data analyst Joy Eakins.
Democrat Laura Kelly is in her second term and cannot run for a third.
