Hope was the underlying theme of Emporia’s annual Walk to Defeat ALS on Saturday.
Organizer and Emporia native Kelly Bosak says there is good reason for hope, given recent advances in fundraising and research. She says the Ice Bucket Challenge of 2014 opened up a world of new opportunities for ALS patients.
More commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, ALS is a degenerative disease that gradually destroys nerve and muscle function. Bosak says ALS research is definitely worth funding, but other adjustments can also help ALS patients.
Funds go to the ALS Association’s Care Services Team. In addition to research, Bosak says proceeds benefit advocacy efforts and grants for equipment. The ALS Association also has support groups for family members and caregivers.
