Latino Awards Adelante will have its final event this weekend.
The awards celebration, courtesy of Emporia Brown Express and several community partners, will take place at the Lyon County History Center on Saturday. Organizer Gilbert Rodriguez says the Adelante effort teaches him more and more about local Hispanic history, and he’s glad to share that information.
Fellow organizer Mike Torres says this will be the most impactful award ceremony in the event’s short history.
Activities will begin at noon with a special ribbon-cutting for a new exhibit at the History Center, featuring over 60 panels highlighting life and people of Emporia’s history. Entertainment begins at 1 pm, with dancing, food, entertainment and a special live storytelling component.
Residents are also encouraged to contribute financially to offset exhibit expenses. Residents can take contributions to Kansas Spanish Speakers at the Emporia Humanitarian Center, 215 West Sixth Suite 107, or mail donations to that address.
