Services are coming next weekend for longtime Bushong city official and community volunteer Gary Smith, who passed away earlier this month at age 63 after a battle with brain cancer.
Smith served as Bushong’s mayor the past seven years, but he was also well-known for the work he did alongside his wife, Dianne, on the development and construction of different components for the North Lyon County Veterans Memorial over the last decade.
Smith was born in Strong City and grew up in Garnett and Emporia before moving to Bushong.
Cremation is taking place. A celebration of life will take place at noon Oct. 4 at Bushong City Park. Contributions can be made to the North Lyon County Veterans Memorial in care of Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home.
