Downton Emporia was, pun-intended, chalk-full of artists and creativity Saturday as the Emporia Arts Council’s Chalk Fest welcomed both to the downtown corridor.
Among the teams and individuals taking part was featured artist Noreen Schroder of Wichita. Schroder has been participating in chalk festivals for many years, noting that the temporary nature of the style is one of the things that drew her to it.
Also featured Saturday was Casey Ligon of Kansas City, Missouri, who says she loves chalk art as it allows for imperfection and more creativity.
Ligon also notes that with Artificial Intelligence artwork becoming increasingly commonplace in society, she is grateful for the opportunity to create one-of-a-kind artwork in a face-to-face setting.
In addition to the artwork created on Saturday, Chalk Fest also included a kids zone, food trucks and an art market.
Chalk Fest comes as the Arts Council has started its brand-new Entertainment Series with comedian Preacher Lawson. That event series continues with Legends of Classic Rock on Oct. 16, while the traditional Performing Arts Series begins with The Rocket Man Show, a tribute to Elton John, this upcoming Wednesday.
