The Coffey County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a scam involving families of incarcerated people.
The Sheriff’s Office says scammers will call a family member identifying themselves as from the county’s Pre-Trial Court Services Department and then saying they can be an option to using bail bond businesses. Scammers then say family members need to send $1,200 to get their loved one out of jail.
The Sheriff’s Office says it does not offer any alternates for bailing out residents. It has a list of approved bail bonds companies on its website, coffeycountysheriff.org. The Sheriff’s Office also says bond representatives will meet at the jail for paperwork and payment. The Sheriff’s Office will not make direct calls about bail bond solutions and will not require payments to it on behalf of another county agency.
