Fire Prevention Week’s local activities culminated Saturday with the Emporia Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Extravaganza, and Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says the event was a good way to bring an important safety message to the community.
Conley and other firefighters have noted the rapid expansion of lithium-ion batteries, which are long-lasting — but can readily cause fires if they have issues.
The best local place to recycle lithium-ion batteries, according to Conley, is Lyon County’s Household Hazardous Waste facility at 3100 West South, just east of the Emporia Recycling Center.
Because of the emphasis on lithium-ion batteries, this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme was “Charge Into Fire Safety.”
While at the Lyon County Fairgrounds, residents could see the insides of fire trucks, ambulances and the Fire Department’s inflatable safety house, which has numerous fire safety tips inside the device. Residents could also interact with firefighters, while children could also practice putting out fires at two different stations.
