Arlyn Schuler is a Hero to me because of his love for country and his family. He is so proud, but humble of his service and at 91 he was able to go on an Honor Flight. He was chosen to lay the wreath at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and its a memory he will never forget. Arlyn Schuler will always be my Hero. – Nominated by Gail Chamberlain
He was my Father & he was very proud to serve our country. He was 19 years old when he signed up. He served in the South Pacific & flew on many missions. He was wounded while on one mission & was honorably discharged & sent home due to the type of injury he entailed. He was a Purple Heart Veteran which he was very proud of & so am I. After he returned home & we moved to Emporia in 1959 he became so involved with anything that had to do with Veterans. He was very involved in getting the Purple Heart monument for Emporia. He was very proud of that & so am I. He was a great father & a very loyal & proud veteran. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 99 as a proud veteran & great father. He will always be my hero. – Linda Sadowski
Duane has done a lot for the city of Emporia and is very caring. – Harry Henrikson
Besides being a “Hero of a Husband” to me, Frank works tirelessly to make sure that his hometown of Emporia, KS lives up to its “Founding City of Veterans Day” title. There rarely is a Veterans’ event in Emporia (and the surrounding area) that Frank is not somehow a part of. He served as a Vehicle Mechanic and a Mine Sweeper in Vietnam, and unfortunately has “relived” many of those situations over and over in the years that have followed his Tour of Duty – but that doesn’t stop him from being involved in events that sometimes require him to “relive” difficult memories from the past. Frank is definitely a “family man,” and a special Husband, Papa, Brother and Friend to many! I am very proud of Frank, and thankful for this Veteran “Hero” in my life! – Barb Lowery
My hero is my father, Major (Ret.) Arlyn H. Sage (1939-2017). He proudly served our country for nearly 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. After earning his degree from Washburn University, he went on to serve in Titan II missile operations and leadership roles across the globe, including assignments in Kansas, Guam, Texas, and Korea. His service earned him multiple commendations, including the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Master Missileman Badge. More than his accomplishments, he taught me the value of hard work, integrity, and service to others, not just through his words, but through his actions. – Judy Neill
