While Madison and nearby rural areas remain in a boil water advisory, a second boil water alert affects another area town, including customers in Lyon County.
Council Grove and Morris County Rural Water District 1 were initially listed as being under a boil water advisory. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says this also affects Morris County RWD 2, including RWD 2 customers in a box between Lyon County Roads 230 and 265 south to north and between Roads A and C west to east.
The city of Council Grove says there was an unspecified incident involving high turbidity, or cloudiness, in its water plant. The result was some water entering the city distribution system that did not meet standards as outlined by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Council Grove says it conducted “multiple” filter backwashes to lower the turbidity levels and the situation got back to KDHE standards soon after the boil water advisory was announced. Council Grove has also sent water samples to KDHE for testing and analysis.
Meanwhile, Madison continues in a boil water advisory that started Tuesday as part of a construction zone incident. Mayor Paul Dean has said the city may have its advisory lifted Monday, depending on the testing process through KDHE.
KDHE says customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:
• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.
• Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
• If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
• Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
• Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
