After exiting the polls Tuesday, residents made their way to the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building for a local fundraiser that has become a longtime election day tradition.
The Emporia Farmer’s Market hosted their annual Soup-A-Palooza, which included freshly made soups from local ingredients and vendors. In terms of turnout, Market Coordinator Trisha Fullerton says the stream of customers was a bit lower both in dine-in and carry-out on Tuesday; however, it was still very steady.
Fullerton says she and others at the Farmers Market like to view the fundraiser as the community’s treat for doing their civic duty.
All proceeds will go to support market operations as it has since its inception. Fullerton says the event comes at an important time as access to fresh foods is always a needed commodity; however, that need may be slightly higher in recent months, especially for those who utilize federal benefits programs for accessing food, such as SNAP.
Given the uncertainty of the program amid the ongoing federal shutdown, Fullerton says they are very pleased to be able to continue offering affordable fresh foods to the community, noting there is a president for an increase in need during times of significant uncertainty, pointing to the rise noted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Soup-A-Palooza follows the start of the indoor market season, which began Saturday. The season will continue through the winter with markets being held every first and third Saturday of the month at Waters Hardware.
Totals from Soup-A-Palooza are currently pending.
