The federal shutdown isn’t over, but enough Democrats voted alongside Republicans on a so-called test vote to fund the government through the end of January.
The vote was 60-40 Sunday night, barely enough to advance the measure.
Democrats have been holding out for extending Obamacare subsidies. Republicans have said they won’t consider the subsidies until the budget was extended. ABC News says Democrats have gained a promise for a vote later on healthcare policy.
The Senate returns at 10 am Central time to continue work. The Senate version needs to go to the House for approval once it’s officially passed.
Meanwhile, the SNAP benefit saga continues. On Thursday, a federal judge told the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP this month. Nine states, including Kansas, moved to do so Friday after guidance from the US Department of Agriculture. Later Friday, US Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson put hat decision on pause until the First US Circuit Court of Appeals could issue its own ruling — and on Saturday night, the USDA told states issuing full benefits to reverse those decisions under threat of financial penalty.
