The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association has released its first rankings of the 2025 season, and the Emporia Lady Spartans are well represented. Multiple wrestlers earned spots in the debut Class 5A rankings, led by returning state champions Kensley Medrano (120) and Alexa Castillo (235). On the boys’ side, Jackson Goodman cracked the top five in his weight class.
Medrano begins her senior season right where she left off on top. The defending state champion enters the year ranked number one at 120 pounds, aiming to repeat her title run. Castillo, who captured gold last year at 235, has dropped down to 190 pounds for her senior campaign and holds the top ranking there as well.
Joining the champions in the rankings are Sienna Spaulding (105), Chloe Steele (110), and Yaneli Carranza (145). Carranza, another senior, is ranked fourth, while Spaulding and Steele each open the year in the sixth spot of their respective classes.
With five wrestlers in the initial rankings, the Lady Spartans earned a fifth-place team ranking in the 5A preseason poll — setting the stage for another strong season.
Emporia will kick off its season at home, hosting its annual tournament on Saturday, December 6, at 9 a.m.
On the boys’ side, Jackson Goodman represents the Spartans in the rankings. The senior is fifth at 138 pounds and will lead the team into its first competition of the year, also on Saturday, December 6, when Emporia travels to Junction City.
With both programs boasting top-ranked talent and senior leadership, the Spartans appear poised for another successful wrestling season.
