Several Lyon County fire departments and a handful of Lyon County deputies had a hand in putting out a damaging house fire west of Neosho Rapids on Sunday.
A fire was reported in the 1500 block of Road 130 around 4:30 pm, and Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage, the onsite incident commander, tells KVOE News a first-floor room was fully involved in flames when crews arrived.
With the stairway partially burned off, Steinlage says firefighters had to be careful as they fought the blaze from inside the house.
Steinlage says the house owner, currently unnamed, had some smoke inhalation and was observed at the scene but declined a hospital trip afterward. Hartford-Neosho Rapids Fire Chief Greg Zumbrunn says the incident points out the need for working smoke detectors, which he says were in place with this incident. Zumbrunn says the detectors alerted the homeowner, who got out of the house without needing time in a hospital.
No animals were affected.
The cause and exact origination point are currently under investigation. The fire was contained to the house and, according to Zumbrunn, caused an estimated $150,000 in damage.
Lyon County District 4, Emporia’s rural fire unit, was among the departments on scene, along with Hartford-Neosho Rapids and Olpe.
