Emporia Fire had a busy Wednesday, dealing with a fire and an injury wreck.
The vehicle fire was reported shortly before 1:30 pm at Interstate 35 mile marker 139, six miles east of Emporia’s East Sixth exit and two miles west of the Kansas Highway 130 junction. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says a car was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived. The fire was put out but the car was a total loss. A cause is pending but will likely be listed as undetermined.
The crash happened shortly before 5 pm on Kansas Highway 99 just north of Road 220, or about four miles north of Emporia’s northern city limits. The Kansas Highway Patrol says a car driven by 24-year-old Roxanne Turner of Emporia was turning into a residential drive when a truck driven by 19-year-old Rees Spade of Admire hit Turner’s car. Troopers say Spade was hauling a feed cart and failed to slow down before the crash.
Turner was taken to Newman Regional Health with suspected minor injuries. Spade was not hurt.
On top of that, Emporia Fire responded to a reported structure fire call that really wasn’t a fire Wednesday night. Firefighters went to 2230 Prairie around 9:40 pm, finding a pot of baked beans had boiled over. There was no fire and there were no injuries.
