After Black Friday saw lines out the door of larger national retailers, Small Business Saturday put local storefronts in the spotlight once again in downtown Emporia.
The conditions Saturday, may have been a bit soggy to start the day. Still, it did not dampen the fun for store owners or local shoppers who were paroozing the various deals and unique products you can only find in downtown Emporia. Emporia Main Street Director Casey Woods says Small Business Saturday is a perfect event for them to get behind, not only because of the large number of locally owned businesses in the downtown corridor, but because it is an event created by Main Streets for main streets.
Woods says shopping local is not just important for local business owners; it has a profound impact on the quality of your community in the future.
Small Business Saturday came on the same weekend that Emporia was hosting three state championship football games, which Woods says was fortuitous, as it not only brought extra dollars downtown, but it also gave businesses a chance to grow their reputations outside of the community.
In addition to shopping, Small Business Saturday also featured the annual elf hunt at all participating storefronts and a free screening of the Christmas film Elf. Just under 30 local businesses participated in this year’s Small Business Saturday activities.
